SESSION 4 OVERVIEW

The previous sessions helped you set a vision for your career and guided you through the four different steps that will let you develop a professional development plan. Creating a professional development plan will help you develop your skills and career. It can also increase your job satisfaction and your individual well-being.
This session is dedicated to the last step of the process; action planning. This involves looking back at the work you have done and identifying a plan of actions to be taken so that you can reach your vision.

Step 1

Key learnings
Within groups, review and discuss the four steps to develop a professional development plan covered in the training module.
1) Work in pairs to decide on what you have learned from this session. Write down 3 important concepts below.
2) Discuss what you have learned as a group, and decide on 3-5 group concepts.

Step 2

Business case reflection
Now return to the business case study (page 9). Would you like to revise any of your recommendations to Carol, given what you have learned in this module? What additional recommendations would you now add?

Step 3

Reviewing your vision board
The vision board you developed in session 2 will be an important tool for you as it will help you remember what you want to accomplish in your future career. The vision board should be kept somewhere close so that you are able to look at it often in order to stay committed to your vision. It is also important to regularly go back and evaluate your vision to see if anything has changed.
Go back and review your vision board. Is there anything you want to add or change?

Formulating a professional development plan
In this exercise, it is time to summarize the goals and actions that will help you reach your vision. Think about the different exercises that you have done in this training module and the insights that they have given you.
1) Have a look at the example on page 32. Make sure everyone understands what should be filled in for every box.
2) Individually fill in the professional development plan on the next page. Focus on the actions you should prioritize and that will help you progress towards your overall vision.
3) You now have a professional development plan! Go back to it often to review, adjust, and update. Use it well to ensure that you eventually reach your vision.
