Rising Star: Caroline Bangun’s Journey to Winning the Asian Championship 2024

In May 2024, Caroline Bangun achieved one of her biggest milestones yet—winning a gold medal at the Asian Championship (Triathle Individual). This victory was a culmination of relentless training, discipline, and sacrifices. But more than the medal, it was a moment of validation—proof that hard work truly pays off.
Caroline’s success didn’t come overnight. She has consistently proven herself in multiple high-level competitions, including:
- National Modern Pentathlon Selection (Obstacle Laser Run)
- Southeast Asian Championships (Triathle) – Gold Medalist
- Singapore Laser Run Event
- National Modern Pentathlon Championships (Triathle Mixed Relay)
- National Modern Pentathlon Championships (Obstacle Laser Run Mixed Relay)
- National Modern Pentathlon Championships (Triathle Individual)
- National Modern Pentathlon Championships (Modern Pentathlon Event)
Each of these events has shaped her into the elite athlete she is today.
The Joy of Victory
When Caroline stood on the podium, she felt an overwhelming mix of happiness and excitement. “I trained so hard every day, and earning this medal motivates me to push even further,” she says. “I want to see a future in my sport, and my ultimate goal is to qualify for the Olympics. That’s why I’m training and competing step by step toward that dream.”
The Effort Behind the Success
Getting to this level wasn’t easy. Caroline’s daily routine is intense—she trains 2-3 times a day, attends 2-3 university classes, maintains a strict diet, and prioritizes early sleep. Her day starts at 4 or 4:30 AM because her first training session begins at 4:30 or 5 AM. “Balancing sports and academics is tough, but discipline keeps me going,” she admits.
Juggling Sports and Studies
Managing both university and training requires meticulous planning. “Every week, my mom and I create a schedule where classes come first—they’re my top priority,” Caroline explains. Only after finalizing her academic schedule does she slot in training sessions, which vary depending on her daily classes.
Choosing Between Sports and Studies
If she ever had to pick between the two, Caroline would choose sports without hesitation. “Athletes have a golden age, while university can be pursued at any time,” she says. She started modern pentathlon at 16, but she’s been an athlete since she was 6 or 7 years old. Sports have always been a huge part of her life.
Overcoming Pressure in Competitions
Her mental strength improved significantly after winning gold at the Southeast Asian Championships last year. “Before that, I often felt pressure, especially since many competitors had trained longer than me,” she recalls. “But that victory gave me confidence—proving that experience isn’t everything. Hard work and focus can lead to success, even against more seasoned athletes.”
Future Plans: Aiming Higher
Right now, Caroline is planning to compete in Japan this year, but her university commitments make it challenging. “In two years, after graduating, I intend to train outside Indonesia to further develop my skills,” she shares. The dream is clear—the Olympics. And she won’t stop until she gets there.
Conclusion
For Caroline Bangun, winning the Asian Championship was just the beginning. The journey ahead is long, but with every drop of sweat, every early morning, and every sacrifice, she’s getting closer to her ultimate goal. Keep pushing. Success doesn’t come easy, but it’s always worth it.”
