Dissertation Summary
The contribution of the tourism industry to Indonesia’s GDP has continued to increase from 2010 to 2019 and successfully reached the target in 2019, amounting to 5.5%. The sector generated Rp 280 trillion in foreign exchange, making tourism the fourth-largest contributor to Indonesia’s foreign exchange earnings after oil and gas, coal, and palm oil. Coal and oil and gas are non-renewable energy resources that may become depleted if continuously exploited, while palm oil requires large areas of land and can damage forest ecosystems in Indonesia. In contrast, tourism is an environmentally friendly sector that will not be exhausted as long as human activities continue. For these reasons, the researcher is interested in studying the tourism sector in Indonesia.
The objective of this study is to develop a research model and identify the factors that significantly influence the business performance of SME tour and travel companies in Bali after the COVID-19 pandemic. This research examines the effects of Green Dynamic Capabilities (GDC), Marketing Mix (MM), and Entrepreneurial Leadership (EL) on Business Performance (BP), mediated by Green Service Innovation (GSI) and moderated by Technology Adoption (TA). The theoretical foundations underlying this study include Green Tourism and the Resource-Based View. Sustainable Tourism—also known as ecotourism—refers to a form of tourism that focuses on minimizing negative environmental impacts, supporting local communities, and promoting the preservation of natural and cultural resources.
The study focuses solely on Bali, as the island has tourism infrastructure that strongly supports Sustainable Tourism. The research employs a concurrent mixed-method approach, with data collected through questionnaires and interviews, and data analyzed using SEM-AMOS. The unit of analysis in this research is SME tour and travel businesses in Bali, while the unit of observation is the owners of these SMEs. A census method was used. A total of 387 valid responses were obtained from 416 SME tour and travel businesses registered with the Bali Tourism Office.
The results show that GDC has a positive and significant effect on GSI; MM has a negative and insignificant effect on GSI; EL has a positive and significant effect on GSI. GDC has a positive and significant effect on BP; MM has a positive but insignificant effect on BP; EL has a positive and significant effect on BP; GSI has a positive and significant effect on BP; and TA strengthens the relationship between GSI and BP. The managerial implications suggested by the findings indicate that BP among SME tour and travel companies in Bali can be enhanced through GSI, GDC, and EL. Meanwhile, GSI can be improved through GDC and EL.
