Doctoral Scholars as Strategic Leaders in Driving Impactful Research

A workshop by Dr. Johan Jang – Strategic Engagement Manager Southeast ASIA ELSEVIER

During the Research Bootcamp 2025, Mr. Johan emphasized the vital role of doctoral scholars as strategic leaders in advancing high-quality, impactful research.

He outlined the global and national research landscape, noting Indonesia’s rapid growth in publication output while also highlighting the persistent challenge of low citation impact compared to international benchmarks. According to him, the quality of research is not only central to academic reputation but also essential in enhancing institutional visibility, shaping policy influence, fostering innovation, driving industry applications, and expanding opportunities for international collaboration.

Mr. Johan further encouraged doctoral scholars to embrace a leadership mindset—aligning research with global and national priorities such as the SDGs and Industry 4.0, advancing interdisciplinary solutions, building global networks of collaboration, future-proofing their academic and professional careers, and actively engaging society through advocacy and knowledge translation.

Through this message, doctoral scholars are envisioned not merely as academics, but as agents of change who can contribute significantly to national progress and global development
