Dissertation Examination of Basaria Martha Juliana

On Saturday, 17 February 2024, a Dissertation Examination for a DRM student, Basaria Martha Juliana [2140003206] entitled “The Analysis of Organizational Resilience of Indonesian Banking ” was held Alam Sutera, R. B0301, Bina Nusantara University.

The dissertation examination was led by Prof. Dr. Mts. Arief, MBA., CPM and attended by a team of promotors and examiners. There were three promotors in attendance with Prof. Dr. Ir. Harjanto Prabowo, M.M. as a Promotor, Prof. Firdaus Alamsjah, Ph.D as Co-Promotor 1, and Prof. Dr. Ir. Mohammad Hamsal, MSE., MQM., M.B.A., CISCP, CPOD as Co-Promotor 2. There were also examiners present, with Dr. Sri Bramantoro Abdinagoro as Examiner 1, Prof. Dr. Lim Sanny, S.T., M.M. as Examiner 2, and Dr. Sotarduga Napitupulu as Examiner 3.

DISSERTATION SUMMARY

The Indonesian banking industry faces many serious challenges arising from changing technology and customer orientation, so the banking sector needs to undertake adaptation processes and have the right strategies to cope with the various challenges and changes. The study aims to test (1) whether there is a significant influence between digital adoption, organizational agility, adaptive leadership, and customer orientation on the organizational resilience of the banking industry in Indonesia, and (2) to test the influence of environmental turbulence as moderation of the relationship between digital adoption and organizational Agility on organizational Resilience on the Indonesian banking sector. This study uses a cross-sectional quantitative method with SEM PLS analysis. A sample of 75 Indonesian bank respondents according to KBMI I-IV. Based on the results of the hypothesis testing, it shows that there is a positive and significant influence between digital adoption, organizational agility, adaptive leadership, and customer orientation on organizational resilience with a p-value less than 0.05, while environmental turbulence is not known to be moderation. This study complements the study of organizational resilience shaped by a dynamic set of capabilities, namely between digital adoption, organizational agility, adaptive leadership, and customer orientation. The research also provides academic insights to understand the need of the Indonesian banking industry to maximize organizational capacity through adaptive leadership and organizational agility by conducting digital adoption and implementing customer orientation principles to reduce the impact of technology turbulence and market Turbulence.

BACKGROUND

Basaria Martha Juliana, commonly known as Martha, has completed her elementary, middle, and high school education in Bandung before pursuing a degree in Mining Engineering at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB) in 1990. In 2005, Martha was awarded an AusAid scholarship from the Australian government to pursue a Master’s degree in Change Management at Victoria University, Australia.

After obtaining her undergraduate degree from ITB, Martha began her career at Astra International as a Management Development Program (MDP) trainee for two years. She then joined PT Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI), where she worked for over 23 years. During her time at BNI, she held various strategic and business roles, including in strategic planning, product development, customer insight & analytics, and subsidiary management. Martha was later appointed Head of Retail for the West Java Region and, most recently, became the General Manager of Corporate Development & Transformation in 2021.

In the last three years, Martha has led significant projects, such as the acquisition of Bank Mayora into BNI’s subsidiary, the establishment of BNI Venture Capital to develop the digital ecosystem, and the implementation of the New Way of Working project across BNI units to promote more agile workflows.

After 23 years at BNI, in December 2023, she was assigned a new role by Indonesia’s Ministry of State-Owned Enterprises (BUMN) as the Director of Finance at PT Danareksa (Holding), coordinating over 25 small and medium-sized BUMN entities.

In addition to her formal education, Martha has participated in various training programs from prestigious institutions such as MIT Sloan School of Management and IMD Lausanne. She also holds certifications in Risk Management Level 5 and Investment Management, including certificates as an Investment Manager Representative (WMI) and a Securities Broker-Dealer Representative (WPPE). Martha remains active as a lecturer at several universities and banking training centers in Indonesia, where she teaches topics such as strategic planning, change management, leadership, and people development.
