Motivation and Demotivation
Motivation derived from latin word “movere” or move so that motivation can be defined as the willingness to get the job done, but there are four motivation traps and how to help the employees escape from them:
- Value mismatch: when a task does not connect with or contribute to worker’s value so he/she will be demotivated. The solution: find out what the employee cares about and connect it to the task.
- Lack of Self-Efficacy: when workers believe they lack of capabilities to perform. The solution: build the employee’s sense of confidence and competence.
- Disruptive emotions: when workers are consumed with negative emotions such as anxiety, anger, or depression. The solution: do not agree or disagree and tell the employees that you want to understand why they are upset and engage in active listening.
- Attribution errors: when employees can not accurately identify the reason for their struggles with a task. The solution: guide the employees to think clearly about the causes of their struggles with a task.
