More often, it\u2019s the result of an underlying issue, such as unclear responsibilities or unrealistic goals. To identify what\u2019s really going on \u2014 and fix it \u2014 check to make sure you\u2019re not part of the problem. Instead of wondering, \u201cWhy aren\u2019t they doing their part?\u201d ask \u201cIs there anything I can do differently to help?\u201d Then, approach the individual for their perspective. For example, if the person is constantly missing deadlines, you could say, \u201cI\u2019ve noticed that you seem to need a little more time to get the work done lately.\u201d Provide specific examples, then ask, \u201cWhat can we do to help you get back on track?\u201d If your team member feels emotionally safe, they are more likely to work with you to solve the problem. Finally, work together to set realistic expectations and a plan for moving forward.
