We are excited to celebrate another remarkable achievement from BINUS University—this time from Team Jumbo, who secured 3rd Place at the INBIZ Paper Competition 2025 with their forward-thinking green-material solution:

“Advancing Green Industry Through Bamboo Bio-Composite Innovation: Transforming Organic Waste into High-Value Functional Materials.”

Following a series of strong performances in previous competitions, Team Jumbo once again demonstrates that sustainable innovation is not only about technology—it is about elevating local resources into impactful, scalable industrial solutions.

🌿 Addressing Industrial Challenges with Sustainable Materials

Today’s construction and automotive industries heavily rely on synthetic materials such as fiberglass, carbon fiber, and petroleum-based plastics—materials known for their durability but also for their high carbon footprint, complex waste issues, and long-term environmental harm.

Team Jumbo identified a tremendous opportunity:
Indonesia owns over 2 million hectares of bamboo forests, yet most of this valuable resource is exported in raw form at a very low price (Rp1,000–2,000/kg).

Through material engineering, the team showed that bamboo can be transformed into high-performance bio-compositeswith:

  • Superior mechanical strength
  • Competitive thermal stability
  • Lightweight and flexible properties
  • Biodegradable composition
  • Significantly lower environmental impact

And most importantly—up to 90x higher economic value.

💡 The Core Innovation: Bamboo Bio-Composite with the Lyocell Method

Their research produced an advanced bamboo-based bio-composite using an environmentally friendly Lyocell process, enabling:

✔ Cleaner chemical processing
✔ Solvent recovery & recyclability
✔ Higher fiber uniformity and strength
✔ Reduced hazardous emissions
✔ Full alignment with circular economy principles

The resulting material is suitable for:

🔹 Automotive interior components (door trim, dashboard, panels)
🔹 Construction materials (wall panels, ceilings, flooring)
🔹 Acoustic and vibration-damping applications
🔹 Green building and sustainable product design

This solution proves that high-performance materials and environmental responsibility can exist in the same system.

📊 High-Impact Findings and Industry Potential

Grounded in extensive research and global market data, Team Jumbo highlighted several urgent insights:

🔥 The global biocomposite market is projected to reach USD 79.35 billion by 2033
🌱 Bamboo is a carbon-negative natural fiber
🏭 Synthetic composites remain major contributors to industrial emissions
💵 Bamboo bio-composites can sell for Rp100,000–250,000/m²
🔧 Estimated production cost is significantly lower than fiberglass
🤝 The industry creates opportunities for bamboo farmers and local SMEs
♻ Resin and solvent selection supports green manufacturing practices

Their work shows that Indonesian bamboo can become a key player in the global sustainable materials supply chain.

🏆 A Well-Deserved Achievement

With strong scientific analysis, engineering precision, and clear industrial relevance, Team Jumbo successfully earned:

🎉 3rd Place – INBIZ Paper Competition 2025

This recognition underscores their ability to combine sustainability, innovation, and practical application into a compelling green-tech solution.

👏 Congratulations, Team Jumbo!
