Being a professional and entrepreneur are two different fields that are always being considered by people in deciding what they’d do for a living. Being a successful professional always be wanted by most of people, but then somehow after several years after achieving it, they change their life becoming an entrepreneur. Various things called passion, frame of thinking, and hobbies are example of why some people change their path from working in professional world then move building a new career as an entrepreneur.
Those experiences have been shared by three inspiring speakers that represents professional world and entrepreneur during the “BBS Alumni Talkshow: Professional VS Entrepreneur” on Friday (22/7). They are Darwin Cyril Noerhadi (President Director of PT. Creador, Member of BBS Corporate Advisory Group), Andreas Suryadi Gunadi (Director PT Soltius Indonesia – a subsidiary of PT. Metrodata Electronics Tbk, BBS Alumni) and Rhein Mahatma (Founder Startupbisnis.com and Buattokoonline.id, BBS Alumni). This talkshow was organized by BBS Alumni Association not only to provide knowledge for the audience who are willing to start being an entrepreneur but also to strengthen the connection and network of BBS Alumni network.
Darwin Cyril Noerhardi started his career as an explorationist for oil company since he got bachelor degree from ITB, he continued his MBA title from University of Houston and got his PhD from Universitas Indonesia. He had been working in professional world several years after deciding started his entrepreneurship five years ago. “The difference between professional and entrepreneur is simply like when you’re an entrepreneur, someone doesn’t pay you or you pay for yourself, then when you’re a professional you’re expected to do something because someone pays you” he reveals. He mentioned that basically a professional work from 9 to 8 thinking about the job, but when the work time is off you’re definitely going to think about something else. It’s not like what the entrepreneurs do.
Rhein Mahatma, another speaker in this event also started his career as professional, he was assigned to be the branch manager in a bank when he was only 23 years old. However, at the same point he thought that this job was not what he wanted, as he is more passionate about producing something that gives a big impact to society. By creating a startup business platform such as Startupbisnis.com and Buattokoonline.id, he wants to leverage small-micro medium enterprises (SME’s) to the next level as Indonesian SME’s is the biggest contributors of Indonesian economic growth. “I hate traffic jam so much, therefore I always find a way to earn money without having through the traffic jam, so I decided to be an entrepreneur,” he said.
Different from Rhein and Darwin, Andreas Suryadi Gunadi who still work as professional convinced that not everybody has to be an entrepreneur. For him, being a professional is not only about work and being paid but also can make impact for others, it depends on how passionate and happy you are with your job. “Being a professional is not about work and salary, when you do it with integrity it will definitely help people and bring impact for others,” said the director of PT. Soltius Indonesia.
Acting as a moderator, Shoeb Zainuddin Kagda (Editor in Chief Globe Asia and Co-Founder Synthesis Indonesia) restated that an entrepreneur also has to be professional in their own and there is no one way in pursuing things, passion and hard work is always be required in order to establish something big.
