How to Market Yourself through Personal Branding

Kemanggisan – In the face of highly connected internet era like this, the face of competition within industries gets stiffer, so does competition within the professional world. For millennial generations who were born between the 1980s and 2000s decades and has the desire to become professionals, it is important to be ready for the professional world so that they become competitive to snag a position in the best companies.

Not only making academic preparations, students must also prepare their personal branding as a step of marketing themselves in the labour market. The most important thing in personal branding during the internet era is managing presence on the internet, on all kinds of social media accounts as well as other online channels. The issue was brought up at the “How to Market Yourself in Thiss New Competition Era”, held by Binus Business School (BBS) Team in Binus Anggrek Campus, Kebon Jeruk, Monday (7/3).

Rini Setiowati, BBS’ Head of Marketing Program and acted as a speaker at the seminar, said, “Today, many companies regard and assess their prospective recruits from their social media accounts and presence on internet. They (the companies) want to know more about prospective recruits’ characters through internet searches. So students and job-seekers must really manage well their presence on internet.”

Furthermore, Rini suggested that students and job-seekers have two different social media accounts to separate personal activities from publicly-consumable activities that may improve public reputation.

So, what are the steps of personal marketing and personal branding for professional or career purposes? Rini explained that the first thing to do is knowing yourself. “You must know your vision, passion, values, and goals in advance,” said Rini. Secondly, she carried on, the student must analyze his or her personal brand.

More about personal branding, Rini explained that everyone should know their own brand asset, which is competences and values within themselves. After identifying the brand asset, everyone needs to build the brand identity, which is how they or you want to be perceived by others.

The next thing to do is determining the personal brand positioning, wherein everyone must uniquely position themselves so as not to be similar to others. It makes easier for other people to regard us and for ourselves to offer more value. Lastly, everyone needs to communicate their personal brand. Communication is not only done in verbal ways, but also in non-verbal ways, such as someone’s look when he or she goes to a job interview. “Your appearance should be convincing and professional because it is a factor in your competitiveness,” Rini asserted.

Eina, a seminar participant from Binus Mathematics IT Department, thinks that the seminar provides insights into preparations for entering the professional world. “I want to know how to brand myself and market myself in order to work in the best company,” said Eina.
