The universe is moving faster than you. So, when you are trying to live your dream, start by doing what you can do.” The statement from the famous author Mike Dooley reflects the enthusiasm of the participants in the Book Discussion “The Case Method: Mendidik Manajer Ala Harvard”. In the event, there was also the author of the book, Hadi Satyagraha, Ph.D. The event took place at BINUS Senayan Campus – The Joseph Wibowo Center in Thursday, August 22, 2013.
In the two-hour interactive dialogue, Firdaus Alamsjah, Ph.D (Executive Dean, BINUS BUSINESS SCHOOL) became the moderator. The discussion’s theme was about the difference of the Case Method and Classical Lecture Method, as written in the book titled “The Case Method: Mendidik Manajer Ala Harvard” which was written in 2012 and published by Erlangga Publisher in 2013.
In developing a number of managerial competence, the Case Method in the manager education pioneered by Harvard Business School is proven to be more effective compared to the Classical Lecture Method. The Case Method, which involves active learning and also student-centered is very different compared to the Classical Lecture Method which involves passive learning and orienting on the teacher (teacher-centered).
The case study, which is used as discussion material in the Case Method, is a true story for various problems faced by real managers. An empirical approach in the Case Method is considered more effective because a discussion can develop the intellectual ability, including decision making and critical thinking.
Hadi Satyagraha, who was listed as an executive in various companies such as Union Carbide, Bristol Myers and Kapal Api Group stressed several times that all people were born as leader, because at the very least, they need to lead themselves. However, not everyone can be a good leader, since they have failed to fulfil at least one element. This element may seem small, but the impact is huge. Action. Yes, action. We need to realise that the challenge often found by a leader is how to find the proper approach in taking actions and when will the action be conducted. An ideal leader is the person who can be strict and consequent.
Hadi Satyagraha’s friendly personality and his broad knowledge can attract other people, encourage them to know more about him. This can be seen from the enthusiasm of the participants, who were not only from BINUS, but also from other media partners.
Ahmad Mukhlis Yusuf was one of them. The Director of ANTARA explained that he was very interested on the event until he cancelled all his other plans. The reason was because Ahmad has considered BINUS as his second home. Moreover, Ahmad admitted that he admires the figure of Hadi Satyagraha as an inspiration for case method. Ahmad also added that the knowledge he gained in the event will be applied in his work.
The same thing was stated by Head of Doctoral of Research in Management, Dr. Ir. Asnan Furinto, MBA. “There are two reasons why I come to this book discussion: the rational one and the emotional one. Rationally, Hadi Satyagraha is the first person in Indonesia who taught case method and his book is really unique. We don’t see a lot of books written in bahasa Indonesia about teaching using case method. In addition, emotionally, Hadi Satyagraha is my official tutor for my final paper and the way he teaches is really excellent,” Asnan said. (Karunia Fransiska)
