A person’s success in innovating depends on the idea and the execution. “Success is a great idea and great execution,” Batara Sianturi, Regional CEO of Citibank Hongaria explained in front of hundreds of postgraduate students of BINUS BUSINESS SCHOOL (BBS) in CEO Speaks on Innovation. The event was held at The Joseph Wibowo Center Building, Jakarta, Thursday (2/8).
Batara arranged an interactive session with students and he gave a presentation about Global Banking Innovations. In one of his presentation material, Batara described a globalization trend currently being faced by Citibank. It consists of the globalization itself, urbanization, and digitalization which can be seen from the increasing number of internet users.
He also discussed a lot about innovation and leadership. According to Batara, a person who wants to be a leader must have the ability to influence people. “You have influence, you have leadership,” he said.
If a company wants to survive, innovation is a must. As a person who had the highest position in a structural hierarchy, he knows that it is not an easy task to follow his footsteps. There are a lot of obstacles on the way.
“Innovation is a matter of culture. There are five things you need to have as a leader,” he stressed. The explanation for these important aspects are as followed:
The first is the vision. It connects to three different things: you need to know what you want to be, you know what you want to be, and how to get there.
The team is the second important thing. When a person becomes a leader, it’s no longer “me” but “we”. This means the leader must know how to work with his or her team.
The third is the execution of all ideas and decisions.
Fourth, you must have passion. Intelligence Quotient (IQ) and Emotional Quotient (EQ) are fantastic. But even if a person has great IQ, without EQ he or she is nothing.
The last thing is legacy. This is the factor which allows people to memorize and remember us.
